End of the Polar Vortex

I went down to the beach today to try to get a picture of the ice-encrusted outer lighthouse. The thing is, the wind was still blowing, the skies were still snowing, and the temps were still too much for me to deal with. Sometimes the best you can do is grab a quick shot, apply a couple filters, and go with it. That's what I've done here. My original pic was so lacking in contrast you couldn't really make out the outer lighthouse at all. So here is a slightly jazzed up version of the St Joseph lighthouses photographed from Silver Beach.

Birds in a Blizzard

It's official. We've been upgraded to a blizzard warning here in southwest Michigan. It's been snowing all day and the winds really picked up between 3pm-4pm. Shortly before that I decided to feed the birds. I knew they'd need energy to survive the storm. These are the ones that came to the feeder this afternoon.

Male Cardinal
Black-eyed Junco
Tufted Titmouse
Black-capped Chickadee
So this is what I did with my afternoon. I spent it watching the birdies come and go. All in all, a very pleasant day in spite of the storm.
