March and May

This is a section of the dunes at Silver Beach in St Joseph. I took basically the same view back in March (below). At that time, Michelle commented that she would like to see the same view in the summer when the trees were in bloom. Here you go, Michelle! I didn't have the picture with me and I couldn't remember precisely where I was standing but as you can see I wasn't far off. It is a different camera and lens (still a Canon!) at just about the same time of day though (picture above at 9:45am, below at 11:06am).
What a difference from March to May, eh?

Senior PGA Championship

The Senior PGA Championship is being held in St Joseph/Benton Harbor at Harbor Shores this weekend. I went down to take some pictures this morning and let me tell you, it wasn't easy. They have the area all cordoned off so that you have to buy a ticket to get close to the golfers. :-P Nuts to that! I happen to have a nice telephoto lens and after a bit a driving around was able to find a couple good vantage points where I could grab a few pics from public right of ways.

There's a lot going on besides golf in St Joseph this weekend. If you'd like to see more of my pictures from this morning you can do so on my other blog, Discover St Joseph.

I hope you have a wonderful, fun, and safe Memorial Day weekend. Please take your camera with you wherever you go and make a memory to keep forever!

Framed By Lighthouses

I know I just posted a sunset pic yesterday but this evening's was special because I was able to capture the sun setting between the two St Joe lighthouses. This is something I've been wanting to do for quite some time now only I didn't know when it would happen. Now I know. :-)

A New Camera For Me

I meant to post this photo Friday evening, then yesterday, then earlier today. But honestly, I didn't turn my computer on until just now. That's how weekends go when you have beautiful summer-like weather, a great lake, a charming town, a photog friend, and a new camera! I'm feeling a bit like a child would a day after Christmas when the toys are still cool and you don't want to put them down.

The photo above is one of the first I took with my new camera on Friday evening. I didn't do any editing to it besides add my URL and optimize the resolution for the web. We'd gotten in town just minutes before sunset so I didn't have any time to read the manual or watch instructional videos. All I did was put the lens on the camera, insert a memory card and the battery, set the mode to "auto" (fully automatic) and I started shooting. It was a lovely sunset, as all Lake Michigan sunsets are, and I had an ear-to-ear grin on my face. I was now the proud and excited owner of a new Canon EOS 60D with a 18-200mm lens. Sigh. Grin. Giggle!

It always takes a while to get used to a new camera and this one is going to take me a little longer than usual to learn. It has more whistles and bells than my dear Rebel. But I'm up for the challenge! I read a bit of the manual over the weekend and have taken a good many pics, some of which you'll see here and on my other blog in the next few days.

This Week in My Garden (and House)

The garden is coming to life. Oh there have been a few spots of color here and there for a few weeks now but this week the color has really exploded. These little pinkies emerged this week.

And these little purplies too.

The ever lovely iris has fashioned a bloom or two. I was so happy to see these because this plant didn't bloom for me last year. :-(

My two clematis vines are blooming profusely this week. I wish these vines would bloom all spring and summer long. I love the deep, rich color.

And lookie what we have here. The first rose of the season! I don't usually see this beauty until June but I guess with all the warm weather we had back in March it decided to make an appearance early this year. :-)

I think it won't be too long before the daylilies bloom and then I'll have spots of yellow in the yard too. I love spring and summer for many reasons not the least of which is all the lovely flowers that come to life.

And to brighten up my office which will become a studio one of these days, my husband bought me these maize and blue beauties for Mother's Day... maize calla lilies and blue orchids. (This pic wasn't taken in my office. I took it in the bathroom because I wanted the mirror in the background. ;-)

Happy Mother's Day to all!

Super Moon Over St Joseph

This is view of tonight's "Super Moon" rising over downtown St Joseph. I wish I could have gotten a picture of it when it first came up over the horizon for the optical effect that makes it look "super" but unfortunately clouds moved in and obscured it at that point. I waited patiently and was eventually rewarded with this view. It's a pretty scene, but it looks like a rather ordinary full moon.

I took this picture with my new brand new lens (Canon 70-300) and using my new tripod for the first time. It's the best image of the moon that I've ever taken but because of a thin veil of clouds it isn't as crisp as I would have liked. Still, it's pretty cool!
