The Not-So-Common Common Buckeye

This butterfly is known as the Common Buckeye. It's a pretty little thing that seemed to like staying on the rocky path rather than on the flowers with the other butterflies. Maybe is was trying for camouflage?

This is not a normal color variation for the Common Buckeye. I was told it's unique to this particular environment and no one seems to know why. Striking, isn't it?

Cabbage White Butterfly

The underside of this one's wings appear to have a slight greenish tinge but the topside is white with brownish edges. This one was a challenge to photograph as it never seemed to stop moving, lol!

Spicebush Swallowtail

This butterfly is one of those whose wings are just as pretty on the underside as topside.
Some butterflies are more cooperative about holding a pose while you shoot a picture than others. This one was very helpful!

This is the Julia butterfly. As you can see, the edges of her wings are tattered. I believe she is a bit of an older gal, but still a beauty!

Giant Swallowtail

This is a striking butterfly from any angle. While the primary color on the back of the wings is a deep rich black with bright yellow spots the underside of the wings is mostly pale yellow with some blue spots and black outlines. Either way you look at it, it's pretty!

Gray Pansy

I believe this is a gray pansy butterfly. It sure is a pretty one!

Zebra Longwing

And this week's theme is... Butterflies! Just another of the many things I love about summer. :-)

Equal Time

In the interest of fairness, here's a cute pic of Kaj and Vladi holding paws, cuddled up together on Kaj's bed. They were both feeling a bit jealous that I posted a pic of Josie the other day but none of them. ;-)

I love this photo for all the many types of boats in it. This is a shot of the Black River in South Haven, Michigan. Isn't that little red lighthouse cute? The ship under sail in back is the tall ship, Friends Goodwill. It's a busy port but not usually this busy. It was a 90+ degree day though so everybody that could be out on Lake Michigan probably was headed in that direction.

Tall Ship

This is the tall ship, Friends Goodwill, out of South Haven, Michigan. It sails 3 times a day (during the season) and I sure would like to make it on one of those sailings sometime this summer.

Josie's Newest Do

I haven't posted any pictures of Josie in a while. Here's a picture of her sporting her new do. We're learning as we go with this one. The latest lesson learned? Persians must be shaved regularly. We thought we would be able to get her accustomed to being brushed. Ha! That never happened. In the mean time her hair got mats and more mats until she was covered with them. In an act of desperation I took her back to the groomer to see if she could deal with the mats. Her comment... "What took you so long? You should have brought her in to get shaved months ago!" Evidently the normal period of time between visits to a groomer is 12 weeks. It's been 6 months since we adopted her and last had her groomed. :-(

There must be a purpose to the unusual design of this boat but I'll be darned if I know what it is.

Go Blue! Boat

There were lots of these little inflatable rafts running up and down the river but none had as much character and class as this one. ;-) Go Blue!

Dragon Boats

It's boating week here on PhotographyGene. Summertime is boating time in Michigan and I have collected a nice bunch of boat photos from last week starting with these dragon boats racing on the Black River in South Haven. Colorful, aren't they?

Big Sky

Sometimes the sunset is all about the red sun, sometimes it's the blue haze, this time it's about the cloud patterns and multi-colors.

Sailing Classes

Now that school is out for the summer you can watch sailing classes at the yacht club just about every day of the week. The kids do a great job and have a lot of fun. I wish I could have taken sailing lessons when I was a kid!

Pale Butterfly

I haven't seen many butterflies so far this season but I was lucky enough to get a picture of this one.

This should be the Chamber of Commerce poster for St Joe, don't ya think? It was a picture-perfect day and I took full advantage of it. One day next winter, when the snow is falling and the wind is howling and the sky is gray as lead, I'll look back on this photo and smile, and remember the lovely scent of the linden trees in the summer breeze...

Linden In Bloom

This is a Linden Tree in bloom. I don't know how I've lived this long without experiencing the fabulous scent of this tree. I've written about the linden tree before on my other blog, and I've photographed a linden before, but I've never had the pleasure of seeing and smelling one in bloom. I think I may be addicted to the scent. I can see myself returning to this tree every day that its in bloom. I want one of my own, of course. But that's not going to happen. However, this particular tree is in a public place, with a park bench beneath it! So I can return as often as I like. Ooooh, I'm imagining how romantic it will smell after dark on a warm summer evening. I wonder how long it will be in bloom. Do you think it would photograph well in the moonlight? How I wish I had the ability to share the scent with you via smellivision!

Cool Water on a Hot Day

White water rafting anyone? With temps in the 90s it was a great place to be!

Beat the System, Buy an App

This is another image I played with in Snapseed. It was taken some time ago.

I have tried and tried to figure out a way to get images on my iPad into posts on Blogger. I think I finally did it. The solution? Buy an app. I bought an app called "Web Albums" that allows me to upload the images from my iPad to my Picasa web albums. From there I can get the URL and insert the code into the HTML page on Blogger, and probably post the image to Google+ too although I haven't tried that yet. I must remember to use the Safari browser to do this. It doesn't work using iChromy.

Playing With Snapseed

Snapseed is an iPad app. It's a photo editing app that is more fun than most. I really love playing with it! My only real frustration is that you can't upload photos from the iPad to Blogger blogs or Google+ pages. I've tried every way that occurred to me but no luck. I've created this post as an email (gmail) to this blog. We'll see how it goes. No option for tagging photos or adding a watermark. Not sure how good an option this is but it's the only one I could figure out. *OK, when I sent the email it posted the photo but not the text. I'm editing the post in Blogger now and adding this text and labels.

HDR Sunset

Now here is an interesting photograph. It's interesting because it was taken with the HDR setting in the camera of my new cell phone (HTC EVO 4G LTE). One would normally expect the green grass in the foreground to appear black as a silhouette like the tree. However, with the  HDR setting the dynamic range is expanded to provide an imagine more like what you would see with the naked eye. Very cool!

I never cease to be amazed at the technology they are putting in cell phones these days!

My Frogmen Friends

These fellows live on the deck beneath the old oak tree at my condo. They are amazing conversationalists when I've had a glass of wine or two.

Rhumbline Regatta 2012

Here are three of the boats in the Rhumbline Regatta leaving the port of St Joseph on their way to Chicago. There was a brisk wind on Lake Michigan yesterday so it was probably a quick race.

Yellow Wildflower

Here's a wildflower I saw along my walk the other day. I have no idea what type of flower it is. Any guesses?

Rouge River Along Hines Drive

Sometimes I forget just how pretty the Rouge River along Hines Drive can be. The late morning sunlight on a sunny, blue-sky day in the summer creates a very inviting view, doesn't it?
