Winter Sunset Over Lake Michigan

Cold, stark, silent. What a dramatic difference from the vibrant sunsets of summer.

The Grinch has come to St Joseph but he isn't raising any havoc here. He's standing on the corner of State and Broad streets smiling at everyone visiting town!

Light Up the Bluff

The Christmas spirit abounds in St Joseph. The bluff is now lit up in a most festive way! Magical!

Holiday Spirit

I meant to post this pic yesterday but I forgot. The town of St Joseph is all decked out for the holidays. I really enjoy this festive time of year!

Cold Morning at Dawn

I grabbed this quick picture on the way to Mass this morning. It was a beautiful sky!

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

We don't have any snow here in St Joseph but we have snowmen! They are friendly ambassadors to the downtown streets. Children of all ages like to have their pictures taken with them.

Come Walk My Paths

Doesn't this picture make you want come take a stroll along this tree lined path? This is more Pure Michigan beauty for you. Enjoy!

Carpet of Leaves

Here's a carpet of leaves for you courtesy of Mother Nature. These beauties can be found in Southeast Michigan along the banks of the Rouge River.

Pure Michigan Color, From the Southeast

Here in southeast Michigan the trees are starting to really pop. There aren't a lot of them yet but you can almost see the changes from one day to the next. They are well on their way!

Autumn Color in Southeast Michigan

Here we have some oak leaves on their way to red. I really enjoy looking at how Mother Nature paints her leaves from day to day. Marvelous! I wish I could paint as well!

Southwest Michigan Fall Color

Here's a bit of autumn color from Michigan to brighten your day. This is a view of the St Joseph River from the shores of Benton Harbor. As you can see, there's not a lot of color yet. I'm guessing peak color is 10 days to 2 weeks away... assuming the leaves aren't all blown away before then. It seems like this has been an unusually windy fall season.

Port Night

It's hard enough to steer a freighter into port in the daylight but this guy came in just after sunset. I was in awe.

Mallard Morning

Caught the Mr. and Mrs. out for a swim, probably in search of breakfast.

Fisher Folks

It was a mighty fine morning for fishing on the lake. I wonder if they caught anything.

September Color in Southeast Michigan

We have some pops of color here and there but it's still early in the color show.

Wings In Flight

One more pic from my morning at the beach with the gulls. I really like this pic of the multi-colored gull in flight.

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Small Wings

This is only the second Monarch butterfly I've seen on my butterfly bush this year. How nice of him to stop by on his migration south for the winter!

Monday, September 24, 2012

I got this shot on the beach just after a rain storm came through. The air was still filled with energy but the gulls seemed to be at ease with it all.

Autumn Color Show

It has begun. The fall colors are beginning to appear in Michigan. There are just patches of color here and there, mostly the early maples. It's probably too early to hazard a guess but I'm going to anyway based on the little I've seen so far. I think the colors will be more vibrant this year than last. Last year's colors were rather lackluster so there's plenty of room for improvement!

Drama on the Lake

I haven't posted a black and white photo in a while. Here's one I took recently.

It was a windy day on the lake and the clouds and sun made for some nice drama.

Pure Lake Michigan

I'm trying not to pass up any opportunities to see and photograph Lake Michigan sunsets. When the grey days of November get here I'll have this to remember.

A Warm Autumn Glow

The nights are cool these days but the evenings are still relatively mild. The sunsets are just as beautiful as they were in the summer. I guess technically it is still summer but the Dairy Korner has closed for the season and if that doesn't spell the end of summer I don't know what does.

Autumnal Sunset

The sunsets over Lake Michigan have been looking more and more autumnal over the past couple weeks. Heavy clouds seem to hover, some light some dark. They make for more drama and moodiness. They are harbingers of winter and the long months when sunsets over the lake will be few and far between. I will savor te next few weeks and then I'll start counting the days until next spring when another season of beautiful sunsets will begin!

Sunday Sailing

Nothing says summer like seeing the sailboats come out to play! These boats on Lake Michigan are heading for Chicago. There was a nice breeze blowing today. Don't you wish you could be on board?

Saturday Sunset, August

That darn marine layer was in the way again. There wasn't much happening up in the sky so here we have a silhouette view at the fountain. It was a very nice warm evening!

Friday Sunset, August

It was a bit of an odd looking sunset this evening. We had one of those brilliant red-ball sunsets, no doubt because the forecast is for hot (90+) temps tomorrow. There was a marine layer of clouds obscuring the horizon and I thought we wouldn't actually see the sun dip below the horizon. But then it peaked out from the clouds just long enough for me to grab this pic. The little dots of black in the sky are the swallows that cruise the coastline at sunset.

Thursday Sunset, August

Not much sun in this evening's sunset. But it was still a lovely time on the lake.

Wednesday Sunset, August

Kaj was cooperative in posing for this evening's sunset pic. Another lovely August evening at the lake...

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Tuesday Sunset, August

It was a calm evening on the big lake. Not many boats coming or going up the river. Peaceful.

Monday, August 20, 2012

Monday Sunset, August

It was a lovely evening on the lake. Not as many vacationers in town this week, probably because school has started for some kids already. It was a cool evening and the sunset is coming much earlier in the evening than just a few weeks ago.

Sunday Sunset, August

I think it's time for another week of sunsets, don't you? August has been rainy here in Michigan but this week looks promising. We'll see how far I get.

What Is It?

OK, so I'm making myself a quick sandwich for lunch and I glance out the window and I see this bird on my backyard fence. And I think to myself, "Self, what the heck is that?" It's a rather large bird, not like duck-sized but larger than I'm used to seeing around the neighborhood. It looks young and acts tentative. I watch it for a moment or so and then I notice there's a second one nearby. I grabbed my cell phone which was the only camera I had with me and I took a couple quick shots. They seemed to be content to just be hanging out where they were so I thought, "What the heck, run for the D!"

Much to my delight I managed to grab my 60D, put on my long zoom lens, and get back down to the kitchen in time to get off some more shots. Here is one with its neck extended. You can really see the speckled throat here.

Then the one joined the other on the fence rail and the two of them posed nicely for a picture. I actually managed to take about 30 quick pics of them before they flew off into a tree. Wouldn't you know it, I took my Michigan bird guide back to St Joe last weekend. I did a quick search on the internet, and then another, and another. I can't figure out what kind of birds these are. Any guesses?

(BTW, these particular pics were taken with The D not my cell phone. ;-)

Windy Sunset

Big winds, big waves, beautiful sunset. When the waves are this high it's not safe for swimming but it's a great time to grab the camera!

After the Storm

This was last night's sunset after the storm passed. The colors changed from moment to moment. Very dramatic.

Storm Chasin'

I'll share another sunset photo tomorrow but today we have a thunderstorm moving across Lake Michigan. This was a severe one that caused warnings to be issued. Below is the radar image of the storm.

This radar image is from the WSBT Weather phone app. I was on a beach just about due west of Kalamazoo on Lake Michigan.

Tiscornia Sunset

The other night I debated watching the Olympic games coverage on TV vs trying for a sunset pic. Knowing the surf was up on Lake Michigan I opted to take a break from TV and head over to Tiscornia Park (St Joseph, Michigan). I was rewarded with an awesome sunset and was able to capture a whole series of lovely photos. Enjoy this one and leave me a nice comment and I just may share some more!

Wings in the Hood II

The butterfly bush is blooming and the butterflies are back! I've seen several swallowtails but surprisingly I've not seen any monarchs. Perhaps they are yet to come.

Wings in the Hood

Well, the water theme didn't work out last week. I'll come back at it again soon. The bird feeder is now a popular place in the neighborhood. Our most frequent visitors are sparrows but we get our share of finches and cardinals as well.

Keeping' Cool in the Pool

This is the pool where I like to hang out all summer long (no, that's not me in the picture). I like to get into Lake Michigan too but that picture is for another day.

Watering the Crops

This week's theme is water. In spite of the 100+ degree temps we've been having this summer (including today) you can still find lots of images of cool refreshing water. This image was actually taken yesterday evening but I was just too tired to download it last night. Considerate it yesterday's submission for the purposes of this week's theme. The earth and crops are so dry that I'm told farmers are watering 24/7.

Saturday Sunset

This evening wasn't just cloudy and threatening rain like yesterday. We actually got rain for about 20 minutes an hour or so before sunset. Yeah! We sure needed it. Once again I doubted if we'd see the sunset over the lake but we did. And with this photo my sunset theme for the week ends. I'm very pleased to have gotten pics for 7 straight days. What a beautiful summer we're having in Michigan!

Friday Sunset

I had my doubts about seeing a sunset this evening because of the rain clouds in the area. But I got lucky and was able to get a few pics. We didn't actually get any rain here but we could see it across the lake in the Chicago area.

Thursday Sunset

Lots of folks were on the bluff watching the sunset this evening. It was a gorgeous evening to be doing so!

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Wednesday Sunset

In spite of how hot it looks in this photo it was actually pretty cool on the pier. Not a lot of activity going on this evening, no sailboats, few fishermen, even fewer swimmers.
