Day 330, First Snow!

We had our first snowfall of the season last night. It wasn't much, maybe a half inch to an inch, just enough to coat the ground and make for pretty pictures this morning.

There weren't a lot of ducks out and about this morning but I did get a pic of these guys, a Mallard and a Muscovy.

The squirrels, however, were everywhere this morning! They looked like they were really enjoying the first snow. This guy in particular was having a good romp.

Day 329, Winner!

Here we have Kaj and his little silver trophy. He won it in a competition at his obedience class last night. Does he look proud to you? He looks bored to me. ;-)

Day 326, Michigan Ornament

One Christmas tree is completely decorated. :-) This is the ornament I bought today at a local Christmas shop, supporting our local economy on "Small Business Saturday". It's Pure Michigan.

Day 325, Michigan Stadium, Eve of the Big Game

The Big House on the day before the Michigan vs OSU football game. There was excitement in the air already!

Day 324, Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving from "America's Thanksgiving Parade" in Detroit! Unfortunately, we didn't get the blue skies and sunshine that were forecast for today. The fog rolled in this morning and just didn't leave. At least we didn't get rained or snowed on though!

Day 323, The Floodplain

Hines Drive is a natural floodplain. At this time of year it is transformed into a 4.5 mile long holiday light display, except when Mother Nature decides to interfere. We had 1.5 inches of rain starting yesterday afternoon and going through the overnight hours. That was enough to send the Rouge River over its banks and create a flood over Hines Drive. There won't be any viewing of the Wayne County Lightfest this evening!

Day 320, Getting Ready

Getting started on the Christmas decorations. Got the tree up and garland on but that's as far as I got. This is the first of 3 three trees I plan to put up this year.

Day 319, The Birds on The Beach

So what happens when you tempt seagulls with food? They fly over to check it out of course.

Before long one of them will get brave and swoop down to grab it. And if you're ready with your camera, you get an interesting pic for the day.

But then the birds get even braver while waiting for more food to be handed out. This guy landed on the hood of our car just in front of the windshield and waited, and waited, and waited. What could we do but give him one more treat, lol!

Day 318, An Illuminating Evening

I could post this spectacular sunset pic and be satisfied with myself for the day. But oh that would be and injustice!

After Mother Nature's beautiful show over the lake, it was time to change location. For this was the evening of the city of St Joseph's annual Luminary Festival.
To start things off I'm going to post my DPS themed image for the week, "music". This lovely lady often plays her violin at events around town. It's such a lovely sound, the violin. And she plays well. (I'm so bad... I asked her permission to take her photograph but I forgot to ask her name. Shame on me!)

There were several hundred luminaries placed around town and most of them managed to stay lit in spite of the high winds. It was a charming setting with the light poles roped in garland and twinkling lights and the store windows all dressed for the holiday season.

There is a contest for best dressed store window. I wonder if this one will win? Kinda cute, isn't it?

It's a very popular event and there were throngs of people walking the streets and shopping the stores. There was Christmas music broadcast at the main intersection in town and free horse-drawn carriage rides were provided. Most of the store owners had free treats for patrons, cookies, punch, chili, cheese and crackers, brownies, and my favorite...

Chocolate martinis, courtesy of Eve's!

And if you're into people watching, there are always some interesting characters to be seen. These guys were having a ball hamming it up for the half dozen or so photogs taking their picture.

I'll end with a festive pic of my second favorite cafe in town, Cafe Tosi. They have very good food and pastries here!

It was a wonderful evening and I was able to get a bit more of my Christmas shopping done and take lots of fun photos. :-)

Day 317, Light House on a Grey Day

Here's a lighthouse I haven't photographed before. The New Buffalo lighthouse sits on the shores of Lake Michigan just a wee bit north of the Michigan-Indiana state line.  The sun was playing hide and seek with the clouds all day.

Day 316, November Color

Even when the sun is shining, the world can look rather blah in November. But if you look for color, it's there.

Day 315, Duck Pond Dilemma

I'm in an indecisive mood. I can't decide which photo to post today so I guess I'll post the two I like best and let you decide which to look at. ;-) These photos were taken this morning at my local duck pond.

Day 314, Holidaze

The Peanuts Gang is warming up for the Christmas season. This is the first Christmas-related comic on this year's desk calendar. It got me thinking about Christmas...

Then, on a drive along Hines Park this morning, I noticed they were testing out some of the pieces of the holiday lights display (which opens later this week).

Returning home, I passed by this turkey in my neighborhood and I was reminded that we must celebrate this month's holiday... before we get to the Christmas season. :-)

Day 313, Windsday (As Pooh Bear Would Say)

There was a high wind warning up on Lake Michigan today. Can you tell? It was actually a warm day with the air temp getting up to 65 degrees but the wind was blowing gale force speeds. I caught this Coast Guard ship coming back into port. It was really tossing and turning. I don't know if it was called out to aid a ship in distress or if the Guardsmen were just doing maneuvers. Either way, it was not a nice day to be on the big lake.

This is a picture I took yesterday. It's the welcome sign for the Lake Bluff Park holiday light display.

This is a little different angle but it's the same corner. I took this picture today. The welcome sign was blown down in the high winds. It's now laying on the ground. I hope it wasn't broken.

Too bad "wind" was last week's DPS theme, lol!

Day 312, Transition of Seasons

There are still remnants of fall color along Lake Bluff Park but the Christmas light display is all assembled and ready to go. The lights won't be turned on for a couple weeks yet.

The air was "Frosty" this morning but it warmed up to near 60 degrees this afternoon.

It seems like it was just last week when the Whirlpool Fountain was a popular place for kids and adults to gather for a cool spray on a hot day. The fountain is turned off now and the lakefront looks cold and barren. Autumn is almost over and winter is knocking on the door.

Day 311, Smacznego!

I feel like I haven't had a good food pic on this blog in a while, so here you go. This was the white chocolate macadamia nut torte I had for dessert after a fabulous lunch with my girl friends this afternoon. It tasted even better than it looked. YUM!

Day 310, Ducks in the Sun

We had a few minutes of bright blue skies and brilliant sunshine this morning. So I ran over to Nankin Lake and grabbed this shot of some ducks sunning themselves on the logs. It was a quiet and peaceful morning on the lake.

Day 309, All Burned Out

My "burning bush" is all burned out. I don't know why but my bush doesn't get as bright red as others I see.

Just as it starts to get reddish the leaves almost immediately turn over to this anemic vanilla color and fall off.

Day 308, Found It!

I'm sure my genealogy friends are wondering why I haven't posted any photos of genealogy records yet this year. Well, wonder no more! I was at my local FHC today looking at microfilms and I found the birth/baptismal record for my 3rd great grandmother, Sophia Łanucha. She was born and baptized on April 27, 1817 in Nagoszyn, Poland. I feel the need to point out that the blurry text is not due to camera shake or improper focusing. It's due to the crummy microfilm readers at my local FHC!!! (I detest them, can you tell?)

Day 307, Turkey Day is a Comin...

I don't know what it looks like in your neighborhood but in my neighborhood most of the Halloween decorations have been taken down and the Thanksgiving decorations are up. Several turkeys have moved into the neighborhood.

Day 306, My Alma Mater

Day 2 of the new camera. Yesterday we headed east to downtown Detroit for early morning pictures. Today we went west to Ann Arbor, home of the University of Michigan... my alma mater. Mother Nature once again gifted me with a BEAUTIFUL day for taking photographs. Seriously blue skies and golden morning sunshine were the order of the day (OK, and it was freezing cold too!). I took many, many, pictures, most of which came out fantastic, but I can't put them all here in this post. So here are just a very few. Some are here for sentimental reasons, some for photographic.

The image above is here for sentimental reasons. This is a picture of the diag which is the center of campus. I walked through here every day for years going to and from classes. The thing is, it didn't look like this at all. As I remember it, there were no trees in the diag. Maybe one or two but it certainly wasn't the park-like setting I saw today. And look! The fall color seems to be at or near peak here on campus. An unexpected bonus!

Here we have the East Engine Arch. I had to pass through here on my way back to my dorm from the diag. Look at all that red color! Not only are the maples showing their red but the ivy on the building is bright red in spots too. I wish you could see the brilliant blue sky I saw when I took this picture but I was shooting into the sun and the camera (good as it is!) didn't capture it.

This is South University Street, my old stomping grounds. Most of the businesses have changed hands since the days I went to school at the U of M but there are a few I still remember.

This is the courtyard of the Ross School of Business. This is totally new since I went to Michigan. I included this photo just for the beautiful fall colors. Brilliant!

And speaking of fall colors... look at the beautiful red ivy on this Law Quad building. And the trees lining the street in front of it were various shades of yellow and gold. The sky really did look that deep a blue.

I had to include this picture just because it's so cool. This is the same building in reflection, in the glass "moat" in front of it.

Another building in the Law Quad. This is among the best fall color I saw all season. I really wasn't expecting to find it this late in the season but I was glad I did!

I had to include this one as my DPS theme photo for the week, "wind". It was quite breezy this morning (making those freezing temps all the more biting!)

This display marks the place where Candidate John F. Kennedy stood 3 weeks before the Presidential Election in 1960 and challenged University of Michigan students to volunteer to help others less fortunate around the world... and the Peace Corps was born.

Here's the Burton Memorial Clock Tower framed by a pair of lovely oak trees. Post card pic!

We ended the morning with Sunday Brunch at my all-time favorite restaurant, Amadeus, in downtown Ann Arbor.

We listened to this very talented lady play the piano while we enjoyed our meal. Which was...

My choice was the "Pierogi Breakfast". Doesn't it look absolutely divine? It was great!!! My choice of pierogi were, potato, sauerkraut, and mushroom. The eggs with scallions were light and fluffy. The salad was crisp and fresh. It was also served with fresh, warm rolls with butter and jam. PERFECT!

Now the weekend is over and from the sounds of it the beautiful picture-taking weather is too, at least for a few days. I can't complain though. I love my new camera and I had a ball going on the photo shoots with my dear husband who was a really good sport about getting up before sunrise both weekend days. What a guy!
