Day 300, Happy Halloween!

I was hoping to post a picture of an awesome Halloween costume worn by one of the trick-or-treaters that came by our house. Unfortunately, there weren't any awesome costumes this year! So instead you get to see the ceramic pumpkin I made several years ago. We gave up carving pumpkins a while back and instead we put out our ceramic pumpkin to greet the kids. Happy Halloween!

Day 299, In the Spirit of Devil's Night

I went to a Halloween/birthday party and this was one of the table decorations. Appropriately ghoulish!

Day 298, Haunting and Beautiful

The cemetery was haunted today.
Even the Grim Reaper put in an appearance.

Ah, but the fair maidens were there as well.
Their spirit and purity were a fine counterpoint to the devils and demons who stalked the grounds.

Day 297, Peak or Past Peak? That is the Question.

Oh what a glorious morning it was on the lake! I only had my point and shoot camera with me as I drove by but I just had to stop. I could see the mist rising off the water, and the soft morning light on what's left of the fall colors.

There was a stillness that was almost mystical... something very rare in the big city.

In this soft light of day it is almost impossible to take a bad picture. But there were more than just soft colors to behold...

Alas! The brilliant reds I've been searching for have finally come to play!

And the cool blue water and sky are the perfect compliment for the hot golden tones of autumn. I do believe that these are the last of the red hot autumn colors. Are we at peak or past peak? Many of the trees are bare now but there are still lovely pockets of color to admire.

If you get up close to Mother Nature's pallet, this is what you see... brilliant yellows, rich oranges, bright greens, and deep reds... and all with a backdrop of heavenly blues. Tis the best of your color show I'd say Mother dear. Thank you for another wonderful year.

And Mother, you aren't serious about the snow showers forecast for this evening, are you?

Day 296, The Great Pumpkin

It's just not Halloween without watching, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown". I never get tired of it!

Day 293, Waterfall

Henry Ford Estate, Dearborn, Michigan. Not a lot of fall color going on here. Some of the trees are past peak but many are still green.

Day 292, Memories of Days Gone By

My husband remembers equipment like this from his childhood days visiting his grandfather's farm.

Day 289, Walkin' at the Mall

It was too wet to walk outside today so I walked inside the local shopping mall. A few weeks from now this mall will be bustling with holiday shoppers.

Day 287, Sentimental Rose

Thinking of my dad who died 37 years ago on this date. He loved roses.
This one's for you dad.

Day 286, Halloween in the Hood

One of the Halloween displays in my neighborhood.

Several of my neighbors really enjoy decorating for the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas holidays. I like it. It makes the neighborhood feel friendly. :-)

Day 285, Last Roses of the Year

My dear husband picked these roses from the garden and said I should enjoy them while I can because he thinks they may well be the last of the roses for this year. By photographing them, I'll make them last through the fall, winter, and spring, until the bushes bloom again next June. :-)

Day 284, Football Weather

Cold, windy, damp, raw... and it will only get worse as the day goes on. Not the best day for taking pictures but great football weather! Go Blue!

Day 283, Witch's Hat

Once upon a time, back in the 1980s, I took ceramics classes. This is one of my autumn pieces.

Day 282, More of The Neighbors

Just to be fair to the cat lovers, I had to include this other Halloween decoration from my neighborhood. The cat's head periodically moves from side to side and it scares the heck out of Kaj, lol!

Day 281, The Neighbors

The DPS theme this week is "the neighbors" so I needed a picture to go with that idea. I took a stroll around the neighborhood this morning and snapped a few pics of the Halloween decorations. Being the huge fan of the Peanuts Gang that I am, it's no surprise that this neighbor's decor is my favorite.

Day 280, Autumn in SE Michigan

I hear there's a few rainy days and colder weather coming in another day or so. This prolonged streak of warm, sunny weather sure has been nice but we knew it wouldn't last forever. I thought I'd take a quick drive around the neighborhood to see what fall colors I could catch. Here's Nankin Lake along Hines Drive.

Here's "the tree" in all it's glory. You know, the one you can count on to put on a brilliant show every year. This tree never disappoints. Actually, there are three maples in a row here along Hines Drive and they each put on a brilliant show. They each show peak color at a little different time. The third tree (mostly hidden by the two in front of it) is the first to go dramatic, then the first tree (which you can see up front), and lastly will be the the second tree which is only showing orange/red tips at the moment.

The third tree is past peak now. It still has all its leaves but the ones on the top half of the tree are dull and faded and will be falling soon... probably in a couple days when the winds and rain come a knockin'!

Day 279, Autumn in St Joseph

This past weekend was the Harvest Festival in St Joseph. The town merchants decorated their store fronts with bales of straw, pumpkins, corn stalks, and scarecrows.

The stores are full of autumn and winter offerings but there are some nice summer clearance sales still going on in the gift shops. Kilwins has those wonderful, HUGE, chocolate & caramel apples in the window. And the Chocolate Cafe is all set to serve hot chocolate when the weather takes a turn for the colder (won't be long!).

The Maids of the Mist fountain is turned off for the season. In just a couple weeks the city workers will be putting the holiday light display up in Lake Bluff Park.

The Whirlpool Compass Fountain is turned off too. The foliage is turning the warm colors of autumn. There are very few sailboats on the lake these days in spite of the very warm temps. Autumn is here!

Day 278, In Search of Fall Color

The day started off in St Joseph. I was enjoying my oatmeal (Mickey D's) by the lake when I spied a freighter coming in to port. I scrambled to make it down to the south pier in time to get some photos of the ship coming up the St Joseph River, with a little fall color to set the mood.

Of course I had to get a shot of the lighthouses with some autumn color too. Then, since it was the perfect early fall day to take a drive, I went off in search of fall color around the area. One of my first stops was Warren Dunes State Park where I found color of a different sort...

One doesn't typically think of beach umbrellas when looking for fall color in Michigan but there they are! The weather was really nice for being on the beach. The air temp was in the low 80s with full sun.

The water temps were in the low to mid 60s. That's a little too chilly to tempt me to get in the big lake but there were several people along the beach that chose to take a dip.

Then I took a drive down to New Buffalo and then across US-12 to Niles. This is the St Joseph Riverfront in downtown Niles. It was lovely. After that it was time to head back.

This is a good example of the fall color show in southwest Michigan at the present time. There is a good amount of yellows and golds, not much in the way of reds. I was surprised at how many sections were past peak already with lots of bare tree limbs.

Day 277, Butterfly Love?

It was a lovely day at the Sarett Nature Center. The Butterfly House was a popular place... especially for those of us with cameras. I came across these two butterflies who were locked in an embrace, thrashing to a fro, for the longest time. I assumed they were mating but once they separated I was able to determine that they were different species of butterflies (Monarch & Queen). So maybe they were fighting?

I was quite surprised (and disappointed) to discover that most of the trees on the Sarett grounds were past peak in their color show.

There were still some trees with leaves but it sure looked like most of them had dropped their leaves already. Of the trees that still had leaves, yellows, greens, and browns were the prominent colors.

The nature center guide was able to point us to a trail with a bit of red and orange foliage but this was the best we could find.

All in all it was a great day to be outdoors hiking around the Sarett's nature trails. And the Butterfly House was fabulous. I think I was able to photograph about 10 different species of butterflies... all lovely!

The morning sun was warm and golden this day, ideal fall foliage lighting.

Day 275, Colors of Michigan

We're starting to see more color in southeast Michigan.

But it's still just in patches here and there. Another 10-14 days and it will be amazing. :-) In 30 days the show will be just about over. :-( Hopefully we won't get a lot of cloudy/rainy/windy days during the critical period. The autumn colors come alive in bright sunlight.
