Day 116, Boys n' Guns

Are these boys imagining the Civil War battle this gun was used in? Or, perhaps they're wondering what's for lunch. ;-)

Day 115, A Royal English Wedding

Yes, I got up early to watch the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on the television.  It was a lovely wedding, I must say. My dear husband woke up early to watch it with me. We didn't indulge in tea and scones but he did make a Mickey D's run for oatmeal and Diet Coke. :-)

Kate's dress was exquisite, a perfect balance of traditional and contemporary fashion. She was stunning. Prince William was no slouch either in his military dress uniform. They truly make a lovely couple! And what about Kate's sister Pippa and Price Harry? They were beautiful too.
I struggled with the color and the TV resolution, but in the end I came up with a selection of photos I was happy with. I'd never seen trees in church before... what a lovely effect!
I got lucky and managed to capture both kisses on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Given how brief they were, that's quite a feat!
Here's to William and Kate, may they have a long and happy life together! Sto Lat!

Day 111, State Bird of Michigan

I finally got a decent picture of a bird! I try and try to get good bird pictures but it's trickier than you might think. It's easy enough to grab a picture of a duck, goose, or seagull sitting or standing still, but trying to catch one of the small birds that never seem to stop fluttering around is a real challenge. At least for me it is. This time around I got lucky with Mr. Robin here. He's on a branch of my neighbor's tree, which also gives me a nice image for my DPS theme this week (trees). This tree is always the first in the neighborhood to flower. The trees in my yard won't be blooming until the first week of May.

Day 109, Moose Herd

I saw these in a gift shop and I wanted to take them all home with me. (Sigh) But I settled for a picture instead.

Day 107, MegaBus!

Whenever I drive across the state I look for the MegaBus (Chicago to Detroit) along the way. Sometimes I'll pass one, sometimes two, occasionally I don't see any. You never know from one trip to the next!

Day 105, Off Balance

I set up a cup and saucer on a pretty place mat and clicked away for 20 minutes trying for a nice simple, clean, fresh picture for the day. Then, as I was putting things away, Kaj went over and sat next to the fireplace puppy that I'd put on the stair. I grabbed my camera and got off a few quick picks before he got bored and wandered off. I like the dogs pics better than the staged cup and saucer shots. So there you go!

Day 104, April Snow Showers!

We had a late season snowfall today, just under 2 inches I'd say. This brave little tulip stood tall amid the cold wind and snow. I'm sure it's hoping for warmer weather just like I am!

Day 101, What is it?

I put a filter on the picture and I think it's a really cool effect. But can you tell what it is?

Day 99, America at Work

I've been thinking about the DPS theme for the week (work) for a few days now. I decided to try my hand at capturing the folks at American Idol at work. Their theme this week was "songs from the movies".

Paul McDonald started off the show with a Bob Seger song.

Lauren Alaina did Miley Cyrus.

The judges, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez (just named "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World" by People Magazine), and Randy Jackson, where hard at work critiquing and encouraging the contestants.

Capturing images on this show was more difficult than you might think. The cameras constantly change angles, the stage lighting constantly changes colors, the contestants never seem to stand still. It was definitely a challenge to come up with good images that were in focus and not over or under exposed. Trying to capture a camera change was especially tricky. I really like this one featuring Stefano Langone. It looks like a double exposure.

Always a crowd favorite (and one of mine ;-) , Scotty McCreery, sang a George Strait song from the movie "Pure Country" and did it beautifully.

Casey Abrams is, in my opinion, the most talented of all the contestants this season. I'd love to see him win but I suspect the voting is too much based on popularity for that to happen.

Haley Reinhart did a Debbie Harry song and I thought she did it quite well. The judges were not as impressed.

No doubt Jacob Lusk has a good voice. I see him becoming a Gospel recording artist.

Ryan Seacrest keeps the show moving along. He's a fixture on the show.

James Durbin closed out the show with a Heavy Metal song. He's quite the showman!

All the contestants, the folks behind the scenes, the judges, Ryan, Jimmy and, ... they are all hard working individuals!

Who will be eliminated this week?

Day 96, Some Like it Hot

I like it hot and so does Kaj. We got to 81F today! Woo Hoo! It was beautiful. We took Kaj to the dog park to run with his friends. I snapped this shot of him cooling off under the picnic table after a good romp.

Day 94, Play Ball!

The MLB season started last Saturday but today is the Detroit Tigers' season opener at Comerica Park. Hopes are high for a great season. Go Tigers!

Day 93, Out With the Old...

Once upon a time, this was a happening place. It was a grand movie theater called the Quo Vadis. I remember it with one large screen back when I was a kid. It had a brightly lit marquee and very plush seats. Then it was expanded to become a multiplex with several screens. They served snacks and even cocktails there. And then people stopped going to movie theaters so much and rented movies on DVD instead. A new "cinema-plex" opened just down the street and the Quo Vadis was shut down for good. It stood vacant for several years while a new owner for the property was sought. Unfortunately, there were no buyers to be found. In the last week or so heavy equipment was brought in and destruction of the Quo Vadis began. I grabbed this shot today while out running errands. If you look just to the left of the telephone pole you can make out the enormous jaws of the steam shovel at work. Such a sad day for a once grand theater.

Day 92, Rainy Day

Today was a rainy day. All day. There were no storms, just a steady, relentless rain all day.

Day 91, It's About the Glow

An ordinary water bottle can look interesting when it picks up the colors around it and has a "glow" filter applied.

Thoughts and Reflections at 90 Days

When I started this 365 Project I didn't create a master plan, a theme, a goal, or a direction. It just sounded like a fun idea and from what I read about others who have done it, it makes you a better photographer by the end of it. What's not to like about that? Now here I am 90 days into the project and I have to admit it's more challenging than I would have guessed.

You'd think it would be easy to remember something I've committed to do every day but there have been several nights when I crawled into bed before it dawned on me that I didn't take a picture that day. By that point I was tired and not in the mood to be creative. The pictures I've taken show that. :-(

And then there are those days when I look around my house and wonder what might be interesting to photograph... and I come up with nothing. That almost always happens on rainy/snowy days when shooting outside is something I'd prefer to avoid and my subject options are limited. I stretch myself on those days and sometimes I come up with something I like and sometimes I don't.

Part of my problem is that I can't make up my mind if my photoblog is supposed to be a visual diary capturing my year in pictures or if it's supposed to be a showcase of artsy photos. It's turned out to be some of both and not particularly successful at either. The best pictures are those that capture my day in an artsy way. That's what I strive for but not something I achieve most days. I find that I'm most successful when I plan ahead and make shooting pictures a priority, but I can't always do that.

I've learned that I'm sort of a lazy photographer. I prefer to look for photo ops rather than create them. However, I'm not lazy when it comes to downloading and tagging my pictures as I go. I don't post my pictures to my blog everyday but that's more because I'm busy with other things rather than because I'm bored and don't want to do it.

I've also learned that some themes can be inspirational. I've been following the DPS themes for this year and have discovered that it's fun trying to figure out how to photograph the theme for the week. Some are easier than others but all have been good for me. I've also enjoyed executing my own themes, e.g. black and white week, and fun with filters month. I see myself doing more of this going forward.

I'm trying hard not to photograph my dog and cat too much. They are good subjects in a pinch but I don't want my blog to be all about them. I'm trying not to photograph any one subject too much for the same reason.

OK, so those are my thoughts at this point. We'll see what changes over time.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS COMMENTED ON MY PHOTOS! I really appreciate the comments and I hope you will continue to visit my blog and comment when a photo deserves it!

Day 87, April Fool

I've decided that April is the perfect month for foolin' around with filters. So this month I'll be featuring pics with filters applied. This being a Friday and April Fools day as well, it seemed like the perfect time to begin.
