Day 86, Genealogy Dreamin'

Busy with blogging today and wishing I had time to get back into my research. Sigh, Maybe next week...

Day 83, Before and After

Here are the before and after pictures of the bathroom re-do. The before picture was taken a few weeks ago, the after picture was taken today. It's so nice to have it done. :-)

Day 82, Effortless

Some days you really have to work to get a picture worth taking. And some days you really come up short. Then there are days like today when there's a "Canon moment" every time you turn around. First I came across this "Mystery Machine" when I ran into the grocery store. I haven't seen a paint job like this in years. Many years, lol!

And then on the way home I came across this guy riding his bicycle in a bright orange jump suit. Not something you see every day, lol!

I get home and download my photos and among them are some pics I took of Vladi yesterday. I'm previewing them on my computer and Vladi comes along to give me this great series of pics where he mimics the facial views...

I'm thinking, "I could never stage this", and keep clicking...

It just kept getting better and better!

Finally, Vladi leaned in at me and gave me the, OK-enough-with-the-camera look and I knew it was time to put the camera down and post the pictures.

What a day for pictures, eh? I should keep my camera handy for more opportunities... it isn't even noon yet. The day is still young!

Day 81, Construction Zone

Hubs has been at it all weekend. He's updating the bathroom with a new vanity, toilet, light fixture, and a fresh coat of paint. He expects to be done by dinner time tomorrow (Sunday). Such a great guy!

Day 80, Desperately Seeking Spring

We are definitely having the cold spring that was predicted by the weather forecasters. It's 30F and sunny outside this afternoon and a bitter cold wind is blowing. We're almost 20 degrees below average and destined to remain below average for the next 7 days at least. I grabbed my camera and went in search of some greenery in my yard to remind myself that it is indeed spring. There's still more muddy-gray than green to be seen but I did manage to find a little here and there.

Day 79, Shiny and New

I know what you're thinking... a dishwasher? Really? Well, it's my new dishwasher, just delivered today. The old one was leaking and not getting the dishes very clean. Can't have that! So here is the new one, loaded and ready to run. :-)

Day 78, Easter Bunny Snoopy

I saw this display on my mall walk and couldn't resist taking a picture. Those who know me know that the Peanuts Gang is my favorite comic strip. Snoopy is such an endearing character! Here he is with bunny ears on and Woodstock perched on his head. So cute!

Day 77, Dinner

And tonight's dinner was... beef stroganoff with mushrooms and onions, fresh steamed broccoli, and fresh strawberries with whipped cream. Yum!

Day 76, Recording for Posterity

I gave some more thought to this week's DPS image theme (planning) and came up with this photo. I'm planning for the day when we all drive electric vehicles and gas stations are a thing of the past by recording one for posterity. ;-)

Day 75, March Madness

What a game! Too bad the wrong team won. Michigan played #1 ranked Duke tough though and at the buzzer they only lost by 2 points, 73-71. Not bad for a team that wasn't sure it would even make it to the NCAA Tournament. Go Blue!

Day 74, A Monster in Our Midst

It's so fun having young nephews in the family. You just never know what they'll come up with next!

Day 73, A Busy Day at PARI

I started off the day with some genealogy research. This is how I research... watching the U of M vs Tennessee NCAA March Madness basketball game on my iPad while doing searches on PARI's computer and making notes on my laptop. How did we ever do genealogy research without all our tech toys?

Then I watched a fun game of Polish Jeopardy! emceed by my friend Ceil Jensen. The questions were written by Valerie Warunek and Kamila Polanczyk. The contestants were Art Wagner and Sebastian Szczepanski.

After all the Polish Jeopardy! fun we dined on some fantastic food. Look at this luscious plate of chrusciki made by Ceil Jensen. Is there anything that woman can't do?

Day 71, Spring!

I was out shopping at Kohls today and I couldn't resist this lovely reminder of the season that will be here in just a few days!

Day 70, Spring is in the Air

Just a little snow left on the ground at Gallop Park in Ann Arbor today. Still too early for green grass or large buds on the trees though. Come on Spring... hurry!

Day 69, A Sign of Spring

These little shoots will be crocuses when they are full grown. Come on spring!

Day 67, My New Baby

Yes, I was one of the lucky few to get a new iPad 2 yesterday. No, I didn't need one. My iPad was only 4 months old. Hardly an antique. But Hubs liked the idea of having an iPad of his own and didn't particularly care if it was 4 months old or brand new. So I volunteered to take the new one ;-) Do I have a great husband, or what?

Day 66, Earthquake, Tsunami

I watched the television coverage of Japan's earthquake and resulting tsunami much of the day. My heart and prayers go out to the Japanese people.

Day 65, Fresh Flowers

I couldn't decide which photo to go with so you get to see both. Hubs prefers this one, I prefer the next one. I bought this lovely bouquet of flowers at the market the other day just because I needed the pick-me-up that only fresh flowers on winter's day can bring... a promise of what's to come.

Day 63, Happy Pączki Day!

Smacznego! I hope you enjoy your day and enjoy at least one pączek today. Everybody is Polish on Pączki Day!

Monday, March 7, 2011

Day 62, Mmm, Mmm, Good!

The pączki are everywhere in metro Detroit. I stopped in to pick up my annual indulgence and chose strawberry and custard fillings. YUM! I'm ready for Pączki Day tomorrow!

Day 61, Flooded and Frozen

It's a little difficult to tell from this photo but all the frozen area behind the bridge is frozen flood waters. That area is normally a grassy meadow. Too much rain and snow! You can see how high the water is underneath the bridge too. There's hardly any clearance. It's gonna be a while before the green sprouts of spring get here. :-(

Day 60, Gnarly, Dude!

Come on, confess. You dress your dog up too, right? Here's Kaj in his Eminem/Shaun White look. With "Burton" on the front he reminds you of a snowboarder but turn the hoodie inside out and voila!, you have his Eminem, This-is-Detroit-This-is-what-we-do look.

And today is a twofer since I didn't get my DPS theme picture posted yet this week.

Day 59, Today I Was a Rock Star

Today I was a rock star. (Or as close to it as I'll ever get ;-).

I just have to share this with you because it was likely a once-in-a-lifetime event for me. I arrived at the PARI building this afternoon (the organizational headquarters I've been writing about on my other blog), walked inside and up the ramp, opened the door and... was greeted by a room full of people who burst into applause at the sight of me. I was totally caught off guard, dumb-founded really. I had no idea what was going on and immediately assumed I had walked in in the middle of a program or something and that everyone had been expecting someone of note to walk through the door. I know I must have had a stupid look on my face as I stood there trying to figure out how to make a graceful exit from this obviously erroneous situation. I smiled a little and nodded and stepped back shutting the door only to hear familiar voices calling me back in. Confused, I opened the door again and stood in amazement as these people continued to applaud while staring at ME!

My friend Ceil called out her thanks to me for writing the series and promoting PARI and then it finally clicked for me. These enthusiastic people were appreciating my writing. Wow, did I feel the love wash over me!

I think I've had a shit-eating-grin on my face all day. I've been thinking and thinking... trying to remember if I've ever in my life been given a round of applause for anything and to best of my knowledge, this was the one and only time I have. I think when I graduated from high school the audience was told to hold their applause until the end after everyone walked across the stage, and being applauded as part of a group doesn't really count. And I know there was no applause in church when I married. I'm certain there was no applauding individuals at my college graduation. I might have had some applause when the waitresses sang happy birthday to me in a restaurant one time but they were paid to do that so I don't think that counts either. No, I think this was a genuine first for me.

People like Ceil get applause all the time. She's a professional genealogist and speaker at conferences (a very good one!) so it probably happens for her every time she gives a presentation. But me, I've never been comfortable as the center of attention. I never seek it and my comfort zone is relegated to working quietly behind the scenes. So this whole scene has been playing over and over again in my mind all afternoon and evening. It obviously made a big impression on me. I'm very grateful to my friends at PARI for making me feel very special today. It was a little uncomfortable but very, very nice.

Now I know how a rock star feels when they walk on stage and the arena bursts into applause. It's pretty awesome.

Day 58, Empty Shopping Mall

East Court, Westland Shopping Center, from Lakeshore Grill (at Macy's).

Day 57, Outrageous!

I'm outraged at gas prices these days. Less than 2 weeks ago we paid $2.99 per gallon and I thought that was bad. Good heavens! And there's talk of gas prices going as high as $5.00 per gallon by summer! Help!!! My budget can't take anymore, lol! Seriously, I hope they settle the unrest in the Middle East soon. For everybody's sake.

Day 56, New Kitchen Clock

I got all new dinnerware this year and the old kitchen clock which matched my old set of plates just didn't look right in the kitchen anymore. After much shopping and debating, this is the clock I decided on. It was time for something fresh and new. I like it!
