Day 357, Winter in Michigan

This photo perfectly captures the grayness of the day here in St Joseph. We had rain, snow, strong winds, and lots and lots of clouds today. Cold. Raw. Winter! Most people post blue sky/white snow pics of winter in Michigan but 3/4 of our winter days here are cloudy like this. This is true winter in Michigan.

Day 356, Toilet As Art?

The ultimate outhouse??? How can you not giggle when you see this?! This unusual landscaping can be seen in beautiful downtown St Joseph, Michigan.

Day 354, Christmas Eve

Waiting for company to arrive for dinner. The house is filled with the scent of good food!

Day 353, Christmas Eve Eve

The day dawned sunny and clear and seasonably cold. After several days of above normal temps it feels especially brisk out there. This is a very busy day for me. It will mostly be spent in the kitchen cooking all the make-ahead dishes for tomorrow's big dinner. I'm publishing this pic now because I'm not sure if I'll remember to photograph all the yummy foods I'm cooking up. I'll try to remember though and add pics here later.

Day 352, Giving

The Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign is running short of their goal this year. I gave a little extra. Will you?

Day 351, Waiting

It was a long wait at the meat counter today. Everyone (including me) was picking up food for their holiday dinners.

Day 348, Lightfest!

This drive-thru light display is a local favorite. We've visited it every year since it began in the 1980s. Usually we like to see it the night of the first snowfall because the light displays look especially festive that way. But this year the only snowfalls we've had have been so light the snow was melted by nightfall. So we made the drive with no snow this year.

This is my favorite exhibit, the nativity.

This patriot display is always a popular one.

And this is the front side of a display previously shown here in daylight.

It's hard to believe that one week from today is Christmas. Still so much to do...

Day 347, Monkey Man

My husband is part monkey. He's never met a climbing wall he didn't like.

Day 345, Bokeh

The lights on my little Christmas tree. I wish I could have gotten one of my critters to pose in the foreground to make this a more interesting photo but they weren't having any of it.

Day 344, Sad Josie

Here is how Josie spends her days. :-( She's not a very active or happy little girl. I took her to the vet yesterday because she hadn't eaten in the 3 days since I got her. The doc says she may have an upper respiratory thing (lots of mucus) causing her to have an inflamed and sore throat.  She's definitely dehydrated. Doc gave her subcutaneous fluids and she seemed to be more alert for a while. Doc told me to try A&D (canned food). Josie did eat a little of that yesterday morning and again this morning but that's it. I'd have to say that so far her adjustment to our home isn't going well. :-(

Day 342, Goose-Fest

As I drove by the lake at the crack of dawn this morning (the pic looks brighter because of my car headlights on the snowy foreground), I noticed that it was inhabited by hundreds of geese. Because of low lighting conditions, I couldn't capture the length of the lake but trust me there were hundreds of geese in it. I swung by again an hour or so later thinking I could get a better picture with the beautiful sunshine we're having today but no luck. The geese had moved on.

I snapped a few pics of the Mallards along the shoreline. I thought this one in particular was cute. Can't you just hear the male ducks' thoughts... "yakety, yak, geez! doesn't she ever shut up?"

Day 341, Icy Lake Michigan

Winter has arrived on Lake Michigan. There were icy patches here and there along the shoreline this morning.

Day 340, New Kitty at My House!

This is the newest member of our family. She's a miniature Persian we just adopted today. We got her from a local rescue organization. It was love at first sight! I've long wanted a smush-faced kitty and when I saw this precious face staring back at me from her little crate I just couldn't resist giving her a new loving home. She's 8 years old and was ignored by everyone at the adoption event in favor of the young kittens. But I don't mind that she's an older gal. I am too. ;-) Amazingly, she is the size of a kitten. She weighs only 5lbs. And when you hold her you can feel her tiny bones. She's very dainty. I'm going to call her Josie which is a nick name for Jozefa (Josephine), a fine Polish name. :-)

So far, she's been hiding (sleeping) most of the day. I took this pic just after we brought her home, before she crawled under the sofa where she's been sleeping for hours. She'll be introduced to Kaj and Vladi tomorrow. I hope all goes well! I expect you'll be seeing more pics of her in the days to come.

Day 339, Holiday Lights in St Joseph

It was a very cold evening. So cold that Lake Bluff Park was virtually empty of people. The lights were sparkling brightly though for photogs like myself who were crazy enough to brave the elements.

There was music in the air, Christmas carols provided by a local radio station. If strolling through this festive light display doesn't get you in the mood for Christmas I'm not sure what would.

And here's the thing. When you get good and chilled to the bone you can always stop in at the Chocolate Cafe just a block away for a creamy, rich hot chocolate and a piece of something oowy-goowy and sweet! Mmmm!

Day 338, Sunset on the Farm

This evening's sunset was lovely. I happened to be passing by this farm and thought it would make a nice silhouette.

Day 337, New Neighbor

Happiness is new camera shop in the neighborhood. :-) The sign on the building just went up last week. The store isn't open yet but hopefully it will be before long!

Day 336, A Perfect Snowfall

Last night we had the perfect snowfall. Why was it perfect? It was about 1.5-2" which was enough to coat the houses, trees, and the grassy areas but because the ground is still relatively warm it didn't stick to the sidewalks or streets. So no shoveling, plowing, or salting needed. :-) The snow was still around this morning when I took these shots. Too bad there was NO sunshine or blue skies to make for pretty photos (those are grey clouds tinted blue in the pic above).
Even without the sunshine, the landscape was still pretty all coated in white. It would have been stunning if the sun had been out but that's for another day.

Day 335, A Vladi Day

There wasn't time to get out and take photographs today so I'll share a quick pic I took of Vladi this afternoon.

Day 334, Grey December Day

In spite of the relatively mild temps this morning (50s) the beach was pretty deserted. Grey, very grey.

Day 333, The Reindog Parade

There were hundreds of dogs on the streets of St Joseph today. The Reindog Parade is always a big hit. The costumes were terrific too!

The St Bernard brigade was very popular with the crowd.

Are these Great Pyrenees? I'm not sure but I think so. There were also Greyhounds, Poodles, Dachshunds,  Great Danes, Golden Retrievers, and many, many more.

How well do you know your breeds? What's this one???

And here's jolly ole Santa Claus being welcomed into town. He arrived at the end of the parade atop a fire truck. Merry Christmas!

Day 332, Lights on the Bluff

Thousands of people showed up to see the bluff lit up for the holiday season. It was seasonably cold but dry. The lights were beautiful and the Christmas music added to the ambiance. A lovely evening! It's starting to feel like Christmas!

Day 331, December Rose

I spied this beauty along the bluff in St Joseph today. Almost like a breath of spring... but not.

Day 330, First Snow!

We had our first snowfall of the season last night. It wasn't much, maybe a half inch to an inch, just enough to coat the ground and make for pretty pictures this morning.

There weren't a lot of ducks out and about this morning but I did get a pic of these guys, a Mallard and a Muscovy.

The squirrels, however, were everywhere this morning! They looked like they were really enjoying the first snow. This guy in particular was having a good romp.

Day 329, Winner!

Here we have Kaj and his little silver trophy. He won it in a competition at his obedience class last night. Does he look proud to you? He looks bored to me. ;-)

Day 326, Michigan Ornament

One Christmas tree is completely decorated. :-) This is the ornament I bought today at a local Christmas shop, supporting our local economy on "Small Business Saturday". It's Pure Michigan.

Day 325, Michigan Stadium, Eve of the Big Game

The Big House on the day before the Michigan vs OSU football game. There was excitement in the air already!

GO BLUE!
